5 Things You Need to Know About Halo 5
Microsoft's reveal of a new Halo game at E3 2013 was one of the highlights of a games-loaded conference. While the trailer was short and didn't feature any gameplay, details about the new game are slowly starting to leak.
1. Master Chief Has a New Outfit
The first half of the trailer depicts Master Chief wearing a ragged set of robes over his armor. While the robes seem like the ideal garb for the desert setting, they also seem unnecessary due to Chief's armor. So the question is, were the robes just for a dramatic reveal, or will they play a larger role in the story?
2. Chief's Seen Better Days
Once Master Chief's hood finally comes down, it becomes evident that he's had a rough time on this mystery planet. When we saw him at the end of Halo 4, Chief was safe and sound on Earth, in this trailer, however, his armor looks battered, and his visor is cracked. What could have done the damage?
The trailer shown at E3 only showed the word "Halo" for the title, so there is speculation that this game won't be called Halo 5.
3. Brand New Engine
When 343 Studios took over the Halo franchise, they improved the graphics tremendously over previous iterations. They look to take Halo's visuals even further with the increased power of the Xbox One. 343 Studios are creating a brand new engine for this game, which promises the best graphics in the series. The series will run at 60 frames per second for the first time, so the frantic action Halo is famous for will run even more smoothly.
4. Better Online Play
The most popular aspect of the Halo games is unquestionably the online multiplayer. Hailed as some of the best competitive play in the business, Halo's online battles are receiving a further upgrade in dedicated servers for multiplayer. This leads to less dependence on other players' connections, and better overall online performance. So Halo addicts can expect a faster, more responsive iteration of the wildly popular mode.
5. Saving Cortana
Halo 4 Spoiler Alert:
When Cortana dies at the end of Halo 4, it is arguably the most emotional moment in the entire franchise. Chief's AI companion has been by his side through nearly the entire trilogy, and is one of the most human characters in the series, despite being of artificial intelligence. In this new trailer, Master Chief can be seen holding the device she used to be stored in. This has led to speculation that the new Halo will focus on reviving or finding Cortana. We'll have to wait until the game's 2014 release to know for sure.
Halo is Microsoft's most famous exclusive. With the recent controversy about digital rights management and a high console price, the Xbox One needs games like the new Halo to be as good as advertised in order to win back gamers.
